A Warm Welcome
As you arrive , the host—a warm and welcoming cook aunty presents at each of our property —greets you with a glass of Kokam sharbat, a refreshing pink-hued drink made from kokum fruit juice . It’s cool, tangy and the perfect way to awaken your palate for the feast to come. You settle into our modern yet cozy ambiance of the home, surrounded by coconut trees, chirping birds, and the distant sound of waves if you’re near the coast.
The Meal Begins
Lunch is a grand affair, served in the traditional style on a banana leaf or a simple steel plate. The food is prepared fresh, often with ingredients sourced from their backyard or the local market especially fish caught up fresh from the sea . There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing that what you’re eating has been made with homegrown produce and freshly caught seafood.
The Spread: A Symphony of Flavors
• Fish Curry (Surmai or Pomfret Curry) – Aunty’s special Konkani fish curry is the highlight of the meal. The gravy is a perfect balance of spice and coconut creaminess, with a tangy kick from tamarind or kokum. The fish is cooked just right, tender and flaky, absorbing all the delicious flavors.
• Bombil Fry (Crispy Bombay Duck) – This melt-in-your-mouth delight is coated in a spiced rice flour batter and fried to golden perfection. It’s crispy on the outside, soft inside, and pairs wonderfully with a squeeze of lime.
• Kolambi (Prawn) Masala – Fresh, succulent prawns cooked in a rich, flavorful gravy with a blend of ground coconut, onions, garlic, and Malvani masala—a spice mix that brings warmth and depth to every bite.
• Bhakri or Vade – No Konkani meal is complete without bhakri (rice or jowar flatbread) or vade (deep-fried multigrain puris), perfect for scooping up the curry and masalas.
• Steamed Rice with Coconut Masala – Soft, fragrant rice is served alongside a dry coconut-based masala preparation, which adds a subtle sweetness to the meal.
• Sol Kadhi – You sip on more Sol Kadhi between bites, its cooling effect perfectly balancing the spice and heat of the meal.
• Homemade Pickles and Chutneys – A spicy, tangy mango pickle and a fiery coconut chutney sit on the side, adding an extra punch of flavor to the meal.
The Sweet Ending
Just when you think you can’t eat anymore, aunty brings out a small bowl of Ukdiche Modak—steamed rice flour dumplings filled with coconut and jaggery, drizzled with warm ghee. It’s simple, delicious, and a perfect way to end the meal.
Post-Meal Conversations & Relaxation
After the meal, you sit back and relax under the shade of a mango or coconut tree, or hummock under a tamarind tree chatting with the host about local traditions, fishing tales, and life in the Konkan region. The whole experience is not just about food—it’s about community, warmth, and the slow, peaceful rhythm of coastal living.
You walk away with a happy heart, a full stomach, and the taste of authentic Konkani flavors lingering on your tongue—an experience at our place that no restaurant meal can ever match.
